Dude, what’s the deal with LU1845?

Got a Norton error “LU1845.” Haven’t figured it out yet, but did enjoy this piece of Norton humor by James Love, titled “Norton Virus.” He says that we’ll have to reinstall Norton. Before I do that, though, I might give the Blink Personal Edition of eEye Digital Security a try, as described on the Security Now podcast.

SF Chronicle’s good pay-per-click advice

There are two excellent general-interest articles in today’s San Francisco Chronicle by Ilana DeBare on using the pay-per-click search engine advertising (Google being the most prominent). In general, I think the successful practitioners show that it can be a very cost effective way of getting qualified customers, but to do it right, it takes a significant degree of expertise and oversight.

Hey 602-624-1887, quit calling me! [Updated]

Some telemarketing organization has been calling my cell phone like crazy over the past few months. It’s always from the 602 area code, with a 624 prefix (this is a Phoenix phone number), but the last four digits often change. It’s always a computer selling some unspecified item or service - clearly a scam of some sort. I went through my phone’s missed calls list and came up with these numbers, then found the online complaints for the corresponding numbers online.

This is harassment and I’m sick of it. Wasn’t the Do Not Call Registry supposed to prevent these types of calls, particularly with cell phones? You can see from the links below that this organization has numerous complaints from people who don’t want to be called.

Caller ID numbers of the spam phone calls I’ve received:

  1. 602-624-1887 [Complaints]
  2. 602-624-4859 [Complaints]
  3. 602-624-0569 [Complaints]
  4. 602-624-0560 [Complaints]
  5. 602-624-1880 [Complaints]
  6. 602-624-4899 [Complaints]
  7. 602-624-2539 [Complaints]
  8. 602-624-4884 [Complaints]
  9. 602-624-0270 [Complaints]

Other online complaints say these guys are also using, or have used:

  1. 602-624-4841 [Complaints]
  2. 602-624-4928 [Complaints]
  3. 602-624-4828 [Complaints]
  4. 602-624-4822 [Complaints]
  5. 602-624-4805 [Complaints]
  6. 602-624-4914 [Complaints]
  7. 602-624-6914 [Complaints]
  8. 602-624-4927 [Complaints]
  9. 602-624-4832 [Complaints]
  10. 602-624-4818 [Complaints]
  11. 602-624-4809 [Complaints]
  12. 602-624-4813 [Complaints]
  13. 602-624-4825 [Complaints]
  14. 602-624-4922 [Complaints]
  15. 602 624-4925 [Complaints]
  16. 602 624-4919 [Complaints]

People say these guys are selling various products including mortgages, satellite TV and health insurance. Complainers have said that the Dish Network, ADT Security, Security Pacific Financial/Zip Loan, and National Health Care Association of America are employing this service. People say that the business often hangs up before people answer and calls multiple times. Also people working for this business won’t identify what business they work for, refuse to remove them from their call list, and swear at callers or hang up when challenged. They tell people to call them back at 800-993-5604, 800-992-3485 or 888-211-5377.

One posting said that all of these phone numbers are owned by North County Communications, http://www.nccom.com, but I have not verified this. I just want it to end. Stop the madness!
