I’m glad Ken Burns made ‘The War‘ during this decade. Many WWII veterans die each day, taking their stories with them. Last November, in connection with the release of Clint Eastwood’s film “Flags of our Fathers,” I interviewed Marine veteran Izzie Barlas about his experience on Iwo Jima. By the time Eastwood’s bookend film about the battle, “Letters from Iwo Jima,” was making headlines as an Oscar contender a few months later, Mr. Barlas had died.
